Hi Folks

I've been on the VW forum but I have now defected (sorry).

I originally wanted a mark VI Golf but have fallen for the A3 Sportback.

It's been 4 months and I still can't decide on which new A3 Sportback model to buy.

I have limited my choices to the models below.

A3 Sportback 1.4TFSI Sport S-Tronic

A3 Sportback 1.6 Sport S-Tronic

A3 Sportback 1.9 TDIe Sport

My priorities are for the car to look good (hence Sport trim) and last a long time without breaking down as I don't intend to change my vehicle for a while.

I have no need to go that fast but at the same time i don't want to drive a snail.

I will be buying via the internet broker route so I am hopeful of an additional discount via the scrappage scheme.

What i'd like to know is

1) Is the 1.6 engine an FSI engine? and will it last the test of time?

2) Is the 1.9TDIe a CR engine? Also why is there no S-Tronic version?

3) Is the S-Tronic system more durable than a manual in the long term?

I know i sound like a stingy git but that is down to the wife who does not want to fork out for regular repairs etc.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

The 1.6 isnt a FSI its 102bhp..... quite an old engine really. But tried and tested...wont set the world alight.

The 1.9tdi 105bhp is a PD.

the CR engines are only avaible on the latest models (2009+) (the 2.0 is definitly but not sure on the 1.9)

They are easing production on it heance why they are offering a free sport package at most dealerships.

If your going for new, try for a 2.0 TDI 140 CR as imo, they're worth around the £2k premium they ask.

And its well worth looking at the black editions as a lot of extras are thrown in on that spec.

Thanks for the reply guys. Unfortunately my budget is only £17K so a CR 2.0TDI is too expensive.

I have checked and the 1.9TDIe is definitely a PD engine. So what will replace the 1.9TDIe engine and when will it be available?

Id say its always going to be there. It remaps upto 140-150bhp too. But the 2.0tdi is the real deal. BTW, if i were you, there is so much value in 1 year old cars.

There are tons like this......that only have 8000 miles and look at all the spec for 14k
