Transform your A3, 'Remap' your steering, i did...

Hey all,

One of the little niggles i've had with the A3 since getting it has been the over sensitive and light steering that seems to come as standard for some reason, and after having a MKV GTI previous to the A3 which has the same basic steering set-up but with a much nicer heavier 'sporty' feel to it i decided to finally try and do something about it...

When i say 'i', i'm in fact referring to 'Wellsy' on here who was kind enough to carry out the Vag-com changes required to get the steering how i wanted it, so cheers mate! [Y]

The procedure involves changing the amount of 'boost' that Vag-Com gives to the electro-mechanical steering fitted to the A3 8P, the more boost (assistance) given the lighter the steering, so the trick was to find out the level of boost on my car and change it to a lower value,

Mine, like many other S-lines was set from the factory to '5', Wellsy changed the value to '3' after researching the most popular settings used, the change in the steering was immediate and results in a much nicer feel to the steering, more feedback and more confidence to point the car in a fast corner as you can definately feel what the front wheels are doing more now, highly recommended and i may even try knocking it down to '2' one day [:)]

Here's a copy and paste from an online vag-com resource with a run down of the procedure...

Modify Steering Boost Setting: Note: This does not work on 2007 models. These instructions will be updated once somebody figures it out.
Follow 'Initial Steps', above, then...

  • Click on '44-Steering assist'
  • When you go into this module, it will scan for fault codes and go straight to a fault code screen. It should say 'No Fault Codes Found'. Click the 'Done, go back' button to get to the main screen for this module.
  • Click on 'Adaptation - 10'
  • Click on the 'Channel Number' "Up" Icon until it shows Channel 1
  • Click the 'Up' or 'Dn' buttons to get to a new value, don't just type it in. People report liking '0' (least boost) through '3' as new settings, I personally prefer '2'.
  • Click 'Save'
  • It may ask "Are you sure", click "Yes"
  • You may want to check again to make sure your new setting is showing up in the 'Stored Value' field, just to be sure.
  • Click 'Done, go back'
  • Click 'Close controller, Go Back'

Seems to be pot luck tbh mate, guess it depended on what mood ze joymans were in at the factory lol!

Best bet is to hook Vag-Com up and have a look, you might be suprised as to how 'heavy' yours actually is though, you ever driven a MKV GTI?
Thats awesomee !!!!

Can you feel more of the road in your hands??

My a3 lacks a bit of feel through the steering wheel?

Cheers

Mine is really heavy - Must have been a bad day at the factory - or maybe it was something in the beer and bratwurst they had for breakfast? "Aaah zees one is going to zoze british vollidioten - scheiss on their arms!"

driven a mk5 gti - very light steering.
Who ever found this out is a genius!

Mine was on 10 and i put to 3 :D

It's a bit heavier but a lot more responsive!

You can feel at least double asmuch through the steering!

A lot safer and better :D
Best value for money mod on the A3 imo [Y]
