Hi guys just a quick message to say hello and introduce myself. As you
probably already realise, my name's Dave and I'm from Reading in the south east.
Recently (very recently in fact) I bought myself my first Audi. It's a
1997 2.6 A4 Avant, silver, manual
gearbox and a full Audi/VW service history. A year's Tax and MOT all for
£800! The drive home was a pleasure, the climate control ice cold, no
funny noises or rattles and pulls like a train. My only concern with the
car was that it seemed to take a while for the water temperature to
reach the middle and when it did I found that it fluctuated quite a bit,
never going past the middle but cooling down then warming back up
again. Also I noticed that the oil temperature gauge didn't read much
past the 75/80 mark and got nowhere near the middle of the dial. Is this
sort of thing normal or something I should get looked at? Apart from
that I'm very impressed, let's hope it serves me well

Cheers guys,

Dave

Welcome along. Sounds like a well looked after example. The thermostat is probably on the way out or the coant temperature sensor. Cheap fixes.

Hi Davey,

I'm only new myself, only joined last night and still having a look around.

Keep an eye on the coolant levels until you are sure there are no leaks. Under pressure, small amounts of coolant can be lost through bad hose joints etc. which is replaced by air when the engine cools.

In my experience, air in the coolant system can cause a wavering needle. But I'm no expert so that's just amateur advice.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, much appreciated! Brendan, I'll have a look at what you suggested with the coolant level and make sure it's not loosing any. As for the thermostat how easy are they to change in this car? Is it a cambelt off job to do?

Cheers

Welcome to the site Dave.......and you too Brendan! You'll both have to get some pics up - it's the rules (well, not really but we like to see new car pics!)

Hi Dave, welcome new myself also.

Might be worth checking also the water pump, my old VR6 had an issue and i changed the thermostat and all sorts turned out that the water pump had lost all its fins so was not circulating the water. Easy and cheap fix when you know but a tell tail sign on mine was that the oil temp was pretty high up around 110. Just thought it worth a mention but probably just a dodgy thermostat.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Cheers
