Just wondering if these are two independent systems? I know the airbag ECU controls the dash & steering wheel airbags by sensing the sudden decceleration associated with an impact, but what controls the curtain airbags, and I guess the seat side airbags as well? Does the airbags ECU have side to side monitoring as well, as I am not aware of a separate ECU for them?

Looks like the same ECU part No. 8E0 959 655.

Ecu seems to control it by side and front impact sensors.

Thanks for info. So in theory you could have just one or other go off, depending on if you've been T-boned, or hit straight on. Makes sense.

Yep seems good idea. The majority of problems with the airbags though is wiring.

There was only one Airbag ECU in my girlfriends VW Golf, but when she had a whacking great head on collision only the front air-bags fired, not the sides. It would indeed seem they're trigged based on whatever specific impact sensors are triggered.
