Recently after starting the car im getting a horrible pong through the air vents (as if something's crawled up there and died!)

it only lasts for a few seconds then disappears

Anyone any ideas?

Is it like a musty smell or proper rotting flesh? If the latter I'd check your engine bay and underside for road kill. There have been instances were cats have clambered up inside the engine bay sometimes... I'll leave you to fill in the blank!

Does it happen when you turn the aircon off then back on again? It could be the dreaded mold in the pipes, which can be cleaned out with an aerosol type system available from Halfords/Ebay/Web. Used it on mine a few times, works well.

Hopefully its your second theory mate!!

ive just read somewhere if i run the heater on full blast for 10/15 mins it could do the trick. It could be mould/damp in the pollen filter.Failing that i'll fetch the old aerosol

thanks anyway

How old's the car - one of the things that sometimes can cause a pong if it's not been done for years is pollen filters - had one of htose on the mk4 stink it up. Also, any condensation?

CkB - its a 55 plate - sounds like its a common problem although its the first car that it has happened to me

Doesn't suffer from condensation problems but the car is 'garaged' every night - there's a pool of water on the garage floor most mornings (from the air-con?)

wonder if its something to do with air (lack of) circulating around the car? []

Also will try running the engine with the heater on full-bore for 10/15 mins later

Change the pollen filter !

It's fairly easy to do. Just get in the passenger footwell. Reach up behind the glove box and you will feel a foam covering. This is held on by two thumb screws. Remove the screws and the foam and you will see a plastic cover. Slide this to the left and remove it.

Then carefully remove the pollen filter. If it's anything like mine there was a fair bit of rubbish, dust and corn and other seeds which will empty all over the carpet.(I had just spent hours vacuuming too).

The filter is about £11 inc Vat so it worth doing this anyway if it hasn't been done on a 55 plate car.

Cheer lads...going to do mine.

I used my AC for a good few hours the night before and parked up the car overnight and in the morning....

ewwwwwwwwwww....

It stunk like a babys nappy with diarehea that had eaten a really hot curry which didn't digest too well...

Ewww...Left the windows open with the fans on full for 5 mins before i got in....

Gota take the glove box off to take off my bury handsfree and ill do the polen filter then!

Cheers :D
